The Power of Antimicrobials: Silver Diamine Fluoride and Povidone Iodine
Course Description:
Dental caries, the most prevalent noncommunicable disease globally, often requires a combination of dietary counseling, oral hygiene practices, and fluoride treatments for prevention. However, these traditional interventions do not specifically target Streptococcus mutans, the primary pathogen responsible for caries development.
This course is designed for dental professionals interested in the clinical applications of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) and Povidone Iodine (PVP-I) in caries management. The first part of the course focuses on Silver Diamine Fluoride, covering its use in preventing and arresting dental caries. Ohio EFDA’s and hygienists can fulfill the OSDB’s educational requirement for SDF application with the completion of both the one-hour hands-on clinical session and one hour of didactic instruction.
The second part of the course introduces Povidone Iodine, a versatile antiseptic with proven benefits in caries prevention. It explores how PVP-I can reduce bacterial adhesion and prevent the formation of new carious lesions, particularly in high-risk pediatric populations. We will complete the course with a hands-on workshop.
Finally, we will explore the science behind Papacarie Duo a product that is new to the United States. We will take time to read through studies to become experts on this new minimally invasive technology.
Course Objectives:
Part 1: Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Understand the patient-level and tooth-level indications for the use of SDF.
Master proper isolation and application techniques for SDF placement.
Discuss how to detect and monitor the arrest of dental caries using SDF.
Understand the reapplication protocol for SDF treatment.
Emphasize the importance of obtaining informed consent before applying SDF.
Gain an understanding of the biological mechanisms behind SDF's caries-arresting properties.
Part 2: Povidone Iodine (PVP-I)
Assess caries risk and identify patients who are at increased risk for developing carious lesions.
Understand how Povidone Iodine can be utilized as part of a caries prevention strategy.
Examine the safety profile of Povidone Iodine in dental applications.
Analyze and debunk common myths surrounding the use of Povidone Iodine in dental care.
Learn the recommended clinical protocol for using Povidone Iodine for caries prevention.
